National Building Code - 2023 Alberta Edition (NBC(AE)) Updates

Kieran Ager, LMDG

The purpose of the presentation is to provide an overview of the changes captured within the updated National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition. The presentation seeks to inform design professionals of the recent updates and impact on building design. Topics include: accessibility, mass timber construction, a new occupancy type, etc.    
Kieran is an internationally trained and experienced Fire Engineer & Code Consultant with 17+ years within the fire industry and leads the LMDG Calgary office. He has the unique distinction of attaining both undergraduate and post graduate degrees in fire engineering and fire & explosion engineering. He has led the development of numerous iconic and notable projects in Canada, United Kingdom, Myanmar, United Arab Emirates, and the United States. The projects cross multiple sectors including low, medium, and high rise residential, hotels, stadia, offices, industrial, assembly/educational buildings, transit, and multi-use developments. 

Kieran’s focus on technical excellence, research, and innovative integrated design solutions have been recognized through membership on multiple performance-based design committees, publications, and presentations. Kieran specializes in developing solutions for emerging challenges within the built environment, such as high-rise construction and integration, the promotion and use of sustainable materials (mass timber) and embracing and advancing emerging technologies that influence industry and society. He has extensive experience in the use, application, and training of multiple fire engineering tools including CFD modelling, zone models, evacuation modelling, thermal radiation assessments, probabilistic risk analysis, and structural fire engineering packages.
